Today, Mardi Gras..tomorrow Ash Wednesday.

I like this time of the year and I especially like this Catholic holiday. I like the idea of giving up something as penance and reflection of what Jesus Christ gave up in the next coming weeks leading up to his crucifiction. It's super-religious and full of tradition and every year, I am literally struck by it. I remember the first time I found out about this holiday, when i was in the 7th grade. I vowed on Ash Wednesday to not eat any meat. Till easter, that's exactly what I did. No meat whatsoever. This year, I am vowing before God and teh interwebs that I will not consume any coffee starting on Ash Wednesday and ending on Easter. So as I savor my last Mardi Gras coffee today I will begin my penance tomorrow. My reflection on giving up things of the flesh to have a more whole understanding of what Christ did for me.


Sounds kind of chessy when I read it, but it means a great deal to me.
